PFC # 1 - "Do a Petite Don't"
Jean from www.extrapetite.com is hosting this fun, on-going challenge for petites! So if you're 5'4" and under, come join in the fun!
Here is the first of many:
The Challenge:
Create an outfit for weekend brunch with your girlfriends. The outfit must include one garment that is typically notorious for being a petite "don't." Such garments include: dresses, skirts, or pants that hit at the scary mid-calf length (not cute, cuffed jeans...I'm talking real capris) or below the knee, maxi dresses, full A-lined skirts, or wide-legged pants.
I actually don't own any of the "don't" on that list.. but my sister has 3 maxi dresses! And they're totally brunchwear... if we were in SoCal!! I'm wearing the maxi from Express, and she's wearing the maxi from Forever 21

guest appearance
I'm 5'1", and my sister is 4'11". As a petite, I suppose I should feel small compared to other people... but when I stand next to my sister I feel like a broad shouldered giant! My mom is even shorter, and I tower over her...
After reading all these petite blogs, I would think that it's nearly impossible to find decent clothes for petite frame. But, my sister extremely petite and she is one the most well-dressed people I know! Her work outfits and her casual outfits are incredibly stylish, and fit her so well! How is it that I'm 2 inches taller and can't dress as nice...
Anyways, the reason I think these maxis work ~ my sister has a good eye for picking clothing that fits well. These dresses drape fairly close to the body, so they don't hang like mumus. I think one could go wrong with a maxi by buying one that billows out from the chest and creates a tent-like effect, rather than pulling in under the breast to fit against the body, creating a slimmer silhouette.
In my opinion, there are some things that are a universal "don't". In general though, I think everything is a "do", as long as it fits your body well, and proportionally. Ill fitting clothes looks terrible whether you're 6 feet tall or 4 feet tall.
Also, wearing clothing that comes dangerously close to exposing your coochie is a don't for all shapes and sizes. Ladies, please remember to keep the cochie covered, ok?
oh what a fun challenge.. I'm 5'2 and It is pretty hard to dress sometimes.
ReplyDeleteAww I love that maxi dress on you <3333 It gives you more height! You, your sister & your dogs are adorable! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThose maxis look really great on you and your sister! Slim-fitting really is the key I suppose... how come I can never find these things??
ReplyDeleteYou guys look great in those maxi dress ;)
ReplyDeleteand THANK GOD expose your coochie dresses are OUT in the EU ... The past 2 years were tooo tacky.
;)
You both look hot in those maxies. How high are your shoes because you look super tall in those photos. Great picks! Those puppies are adorable
ReplyDeleteThose dresses look HOT on you guys!!!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to find one that makes me not look like I'm drowning in fabric and maybe borderline midget.
^__^ I should check out petite clothing stores!
Love the Maxis on you and your sis. Honestly, I had never wanted to wear a maxi until I saw it on you and Hanna@EvolvingStyle. You rock, Sophia.
ReplyDeleteYour fluffy buddies are adorable. You adore Snooki, don't you? hehe
You two look great in Maxis!!! Yikes Snookie is all sorts of a hot mess!!!
ReplyDeleteSusan is 4'11!??! Why do I remember her being so much taller.. Was she wearing heels the night we all went to Happy Hour!?
ReplyDelete^Mary ~ At the risk of sounding ignorant.. I had no idea that style was "in" in the EU!! Now I want to look up pics and stuff haha!
ReplyDeletePLG ~ We're both wearing 3" wedges.. they were the shoes we wore to dinner and we didn't wear them specifically to pair w/the dress (wasn't at home). I'd prob wear strappy sandals w/a maxi..
Thanks guys! ^_^
^Susy ~ yes she was! Susan ALWAYS wears heels haha, and pretty darn high ones! She used to do en pointe in ballet so she can wear 4" heels all day.
ReplyDeleteHey sexy lady! You look hot in that dress! Long column maxi's are a definite DO in my book :)
ReplyDeleteI got distracted by the names of your dogs. Mochi and Kimchi?! I LOVE IT!!!!! just too stinkin' cute!!
ReplyDeleteI think maxi dresses are a total DO for petites. I never knew they were even considered a Don't. In fact, I think it's a Don't for tall people (by tall, I mean 5'6+). It looks like a tent on some girls. and on top of that, I think it's even more of a Don't on tall women w/curves b/c the maxi dress isn't meant to be tight so it has to fit the largest part of a curvy woman's body from the top of the torso through the ankle, and well...that's not always the most flattering. That's why I think it is better on a petite frame. Gives off that boho-chic, oversized, care-free style.
^Thanks Elle!
ReplyDeleteAubrey ~ wow you just said my thoughts EXACTLY! I'm all about the oversized care-free style!!
Love the doggies! I think you and your sis are right about the maxi-dresses: these drape really well and fit closely to the body so they don't overwhelm you. And good advice about the coochie.
ReplyDeletei love the maxi on you and susan. it fits you so well...the length is perfect and love the patterns on both. i was eye-ing the forever21 maxi but they sold out of that in the store!
ReplyDeletemochi and kimchi are so adorable....i want to put them on a cracker and eat 'em up. hahah!
Both of you guys look really good in those dresses (and your doggies are sooo sweet!)
ReplyDeleteDid your sister had to alter the length of the dresses? They do fit just right!
ReplyDeleteLove you guys (pups inclusive)! You and the sis have identical body types lol...looks like two super slim figures with perfectly fitting maxis...that must've been quite the sight to see in real person : )
ReplyDeleteI agree with Aubrey...I love petites in maxis that are slim-cut...such as the one Ping modeled not too long ago. The ones on you two are total do's in my book!
girl i never knew you were shorter than me! you totally fool me with your tiny skinny legs and struttin' heels :P these maxis look nice on you two! you should def come down to socal to enjoy some sunny brunch weather
ReplyDelete^CCE ~ Yes, my sister hemmed the length of the Forever 21 tie dye maxi. It would've been floor-length on me with heels on.
ReplyDeleteAngie ~ oh I so badly want to go to SoCal and shop Robertson Blvd and eat at Mr. Chow and shop Kitson and do the whole "SoCal" thing.. maybe next yr :\
ooh the maxi looks great on you!
ReplyDeletei can't pull it off :(
I absolutely adore these maxis, I have to agree with you that just as long as the torso fits than you are a half step further in making it a do! The length might be a problem with petites but nothing like a quick hem job! Your maxi is so much more traditional than mine and it definitely flattering!
ReplyDeleteheehee, vain little doggies that need to be in every pic! you forgot to credit yourself with helping me pick out a lot of my clothes. and i have to agree with nelah, i think deep down you <3 snooki! maybe you should create a snooki themed challenge?
ReplyDelete^Susan~ I still need to teach those doggies a lesson by making hot dogs outta them! A Snooki themed challenge? Oh dear lord I think it'll make my eyes burn... !
ReplyDeleteThese maxis look so pretty on you and your sister. Love the prints on them. Ditto what Aubrey said about maxi's being a don't for a lot of taller people too...it's so easy to be swallowed alive by all that fabric and look like tents than people.
ReplyDeleteYour puppies are so cute, I like that you name them after food items.
